San Antonio Youth Ballet Presents

The Nutcracker: A Texas Folklorico Story - A Holiday Experience Uniquely San Antonio

An Original Reimagining of the Holiday Classic Celebrates San Antonio’s History, Cultural Traditions, and Artistic Community, Featuring Live Orchestral Music by Harmonium of Texas

SAN ANTONIO, TX - October 22, 2026 - This holiday season, San Antonio Youth Ballet (SAYB) invites audiences to experience The Nutcracker in an entirely new way.  The Nutcracker: A Texas Folklorico Story, presented December 11–13, 2026, at the Lila Cockrell Theatre, transforms the beloved holiday classic into a celebration of San Antonio’s rich history, cultural diversity, and artistic heritage.

General public tickets go on sale Monday, October 26, at 10:00 AM through Ticketmaster.

Far from a traditional staging of The Nutcracker, this original production transports audiences into the heart of historic San Antonio, where familiar landmarks, local traditions, and the magic of the holiday season come together through classical ballet, live orchestral music, and cultural storytelling.

The story begins at the historic Menger Hotel, where an elegant holiday celebration sets the stage for an extraordinary adventure. As the evening unfolds, audiences journey to the iconic Alamo and beyond, experiencing a distinctly Texas interpretation of the timeless tale.

Adding to the production’s grandeur, Harmonium of Texas will provide live orchestral accompaniment, showcasing the sumptuous orchestration, expressive melodies, and musical brilliance of Tchaikovsky’s timeless score—a rare opportunity for ballet lovers. The orchestra was founded under the artistic leadership of internationally acclaimed pianist and conductor Jeffrey Kahane, Artistic Director of Harmonium of Texas, with Ezra Calvino conducting the performances.

A defining feature of the production is its celebration of San Antonio’s multicultural identity. Special artistic collaborations with Ballet Folklórico del Sol, the San Antonio Lion Dance Association, and the Rhythmics School of Kathak Dance bring a rich tapestry of dance traditions to the stage, reflecting the communities and cultures that have shaped the city’s distinctive character.

“The Nutcracker: A Texas Folklorico Story is more than a holiday ballet.  It is a celebration of the city we call home,” said Danielle Campbell Steans, Director of San Antonio Youth Ballet. “We wanted to create something that honors San Antonio’s history and cultural heritage while preserving the magic and beauty of classical ballet.  By bringing together our young dancers, live orchestral musicians, and extraordinary cultural artists, we are creating an experience and hopefully a new holiday tradition that San Antonio families can recognize as uniquely their own.”

Through imaginative storytelling, elaborate costumes, captivating choreography, and live music, the production offers audiences an opportunity to experience a beloved holiday tradition through a distinctly San Antonio lens.

With performances designed to inspire audiences of all ages, The Nutcracker: A Texas Folklorico Story celebrates the power of the performing arts to connect generations, honor cultural traditions, and bring communities together.
